An Oldham Labour MP has called on the Prime Minister to condemn leaflets she claims were handed out by some of the borough's Conservatives during the recent local elections.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Wednesday (May 25) Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Debbie Abrahams asked Boris Johnson if he would denounce the leaflets.

She put the question to the Prime Minister during a debate on the Sue Gray report.

Ms Abrahams asked: "Will [the Prime Minister] condemn those Oldham Conservative candidates who delivered toxic racist and misogynistic leaflets during the recent local elections?"

She added that the Conservative Party chair had details of the leaflets.

The Prime Minister responded by saying he would "be very happy to look at those details" if Ms Abrahams sent them to him.

During the course of the local election build up, former Oldham Council leader Arooj Shah was twice critical of the Oldham Conservatives over leaflets which were being handed out.

In late March, she called on the Oldham Conservatives to distance themselves from leaflets she said caused her "significant distress" and contained seven references to her race and religion.

In April, she then accused the Oldham Conservatives of collaborating with a third party to hand out the leaflets which she described as "defamatory and malicious".

Oldham Conservatives at the time denied they were involved with handing out the leaflets.

During the election campaigning, new council leader Amanda Chadderton also criticised the Conservatives for leaflets which she said were "beyond the pale racist and misogynistic".

Councillor Dave Arnott, responding at the time, strongly denied the accusation, saying: "Oldham Conservatives would never publish or distribute anything racist or misogynistic in any way, and strongly condemn this form of discrimination wherever it is found.

"It is puzzling that Councillor Chadderton appears not to want the people of Oldham to know that Councillor Arooj Shah is the Labour Leader of Oldham Council.

"Serious allegations of racism and misogyny require serious proof.

"The Labour Party in Oldham seem to enjoy playing identity politics more than delivering on local priorities."

When contacted for a follow up to her question in the House of Commons, Ms Abrahams called the Prime Minister a "habitual law breaker" and said his actions had impacted Oldham.

She said: "In Oldham, the consequences of the Prime Minister’s behaviour has been seen locally: some Conservative candidates delivering racist and misogynistic leaflets during the recent local elections.

"l have also seen evidence of Islamophobic and BNP-sympathising social media posts by a recently elected Conservative councillor."

She said both she and Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon have written to Conservative Party chair Oliver Dowden "demanding action to tackle this toxic behaviour".

She added: "Oldham deserves much better than this disgusting, toxic behaviour."

The Oldham Conservatives and 10 Downing Street were contacted to provide comment.
