A Hollinwood pub has caused a stir on Facebook after announcing a new dress code, which bans manbags and caps – among other restrictions.

The Famous King George's new rules have been released two days before the pub reopens to the public after a £127,000 refurbishment.

The Hollins Road pub will open tomorrow, Friday, June 3 at 12pm, though anyone wearing a "manbag" or a cap will be turned away.

The pub’s new landlord says the rules are to tackle a drug culture and make the community safer.

Four-piece rock band Urban Myth are set to perform on the pub’s opening night, with Crazy Bingo set to be hosted on Sunday.

Under 21s are also barred from the pub – though the establishment has clarified that children are allowed in during the day.

Those wearing hoodies, workwear or gym gear will also have to get changed if visiting the pub after 6pm Thursday to Sunday.

The venue also stressed its strict no drug policy –with the venue insisting on Facebook that there would be “no second chances and no excuses.”

Facebook commenter Garry Hamilton said: “No man bags ...is that sex discrimination???”

Mike Tierney was also concerned about discrimination – commenting: “Discrimination as to head coverings and gender-related bags? Good luck with all that mate.

"I think you're going to need it.

"When I vacationed in the area the last time, I wore a ball cap to keep the sun off my head (skin cancer scare) and carried a camera case.

"I'll make note for the next time that I won't be welcome in your pub. No-one else turfed me out.”

However, commenter Carl Hugh Spiers appeared to agree with the rules, saying: “Good on you, respects.”

Steve Read, the new landlord of the pub, he told The Oldham Times that he has spent £127,000 on renovating it to bring it back.

Asked about the new rules banning "manbags" and caps, Steve said: “We’re trying to turn around its bad reputation.

“There’s a drugs culture around here that we have to tackle in order to make the community safer.”

Asked about commenters who had raised concerns about sex discrimination, Steve said he wouldn’t comment, but thought it was “just keyboard warriors,” since “nobody says a man is carrying a purse".
