A Glodwick GP surgery which was in "special measures" has been given a boost after its latest inspection.

Sunvalley Medical Practice, based at Glodwick Primary Care Centre on Glodwick Road has been ranked "good" by watchdog,  the Care Quality Commision (CQC), for keeping patients safe and protected from avoidable harm.

In 2019, the practice was found to have "dirty and dusty" rooms, in a damning inspection that saw it placed in special measures.

Other areas at the surgery scored "good" too as it was was found to be giving patients effective care and treatment, dealing with patients kindly and respectfully, and responding well to the challenges of the pandemic.

Now under new management, the practice’s leadership has been rated as "outstanding", with inspectors noting leaders have a strategy in place to continually improve the standard of care.

The practice received a "good" rating overall.

Laura Neilson, who works at Hope Citadel Healthcare‚ which took over the practice, said she was "genuinely chuffed" at the report.

Laura said: “I’m so proud of the team – they’re amazing, it's really encouraging.

“And it’s so much better for the patients in that community - it’s obviously quite a deprived community.

"Actually having health systems that work well is really important for quality of life.

“It’s really good news.”

Inspectors noted that the GP service had a good understanding of the challenges faced in their area and had a strategy in place to improve care and treatment.

Additionally, staff felt valued and gave consistently positive feedback.

While there were no breaches of regulations, some areas of improvement were identified – inspectors recommended the practice try to bring childhood vaccinations in line with World Health Organization targets, and to improve the level of cervical screenings.

The practice was commended for going door-to-door during the pandemic in areas of high Covid prevalence, and for visiting local shop owners to educate them on Covid prevention measures.

The practice’s bereavement support was also said to be “exceptional".
