The mugshot of the man responsible for the killing of Tamby Dowling has been released after he was given a life sentence.

At Manchester Crown Court on Thursday, June 30, Abid Mahmood was given a life sentence, with a minimum of 10 years.

Due to his mental health issues, he was given a hybrid order, meaning he will remain in hospital and when he is deemed to be well enough be moved to jail.

In his comments made as he passed down sentence, Judge Alan Conrad QC said the incident was a "planned and premeditated offence" and the stabbing itself was "a savage and sustained attack".

Judge Conrad said he believed Mahmood is a dangerous offender.

On the evening of November 8, 2021, Mahmood took a taxi from an address in Werneth to Tamby's house on Water Mill Avenue in Chadderton.

He was armed with a knife and managed to enter the house while the taxi waited outside.

He was there for less than two-and-a-half minutes, during which time he stabbed Tamby eight times in her torso, causing "catastrophic damage to her heart".

In a statement read out by Frida Hussain QC, defending Mahmood, he said he was "devastated by the devastation he has caused", adding he had no memory of the attack.

Mahmood currently has paranoid schizophrenia and has a long history of mental health issues.

Following the sentencing, Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe, of Greater Manchester Police's Serious Crime Division, said: "Our thoughts are with Tamby's family and friends, and can only hope today's sentence brings some comfort to them.

"This is a horrific example of violence against women and girls and we are absolutely committed to tackling violence against women and girls - if anyone thinks they are in danger or at the risk of violence, they should always call the police."

Anyone who is concerned that someone they know may be a victim of domestic abuse can make an application to the ‘Clare's Law’ scheme.

The scheme involves running checks on an individual to see if they have a record of offences relating to domestic abuse, or there is information to indicate that any new partners may be at risk so the applicant can make an informed choice about the relationship.
