In true wartime spirit, Saddleworth businesses have promised to celebrate Yanks-style events next month.

Earlier this month organisers of the Yanks are Back in Saddleworth shocked the community when they cancelled this year’s popular crowd pulling event.

The centrepiece military show, vehicle parade, entertainment and historical displays usually involves Uppermill and Dobcross where scenes from Yanks, a film starring Richard Gere shot in 1979, were filmed.

The organiser Paul Dog Tag Higginson cited ‘many reasons’ behind his decision to call August's event off but highlighted problems finding a new venue and financial restraints due to the event not taking place over the last two years.

But now local resident Claire Howarth, has launched a Facebook page, Saddleworth Wartime Weekend, collating events that will take place on August 5-8.

Claire said: “We do not surrender so easily. In true wartime spirit we will keep calm and carry on!

“The parade, flyover and paid event have been cancelled by the event organisers but the Yanks Weekend is far more than that.

"Lots of activities are still available to attend in Uppermill and the surrounding villages."

She added: “Here in Saddleworth we don’t need much of an excuse for a sing-song, dance and parade, so please come and join us on August 5-8 for our annual wartime weekend.”

Carol Oldham, who is helping Claire collate information about the events, said: “There is a lot been planned.”

Meantime, Mr Higginson is remaining tight lipped about his future plans but revealed: “We have a new sponsor and a new location to stage the event in 2023.”
