Plans for a takeaway in Shaw have been turned down for a third time, this time by the government's Planning Inspectorate.

A change-of-use application was issued to the council in July 2021 to turn a shop on Trent Road, High Crompton, into a hot food takeaway.

Two previous applications had failed and this proposal was also turned down in September 2021, however it was appealed.

The plans have been met with objections from residents and a councillor throughout.

On May 18, an inspector appointed by the government known as M Clowes visited the site of the proposed takeaway.

The inspector said the main reasons for the appeal being turned down were the noise and disturbance the takeaway would bring to the neighbourhood and road safety.

The site of the proposed takeaway is in a residential area and currently operates as a newsagent which only opens for a few hours each morning.

Describing the area surrounding the site, the inspector said it had a "predominantly suburban, residential character" and pointed out takeaways can generate significant amounts of noise and odours.

Along with the disturbance it would cause to residents, the inspector pointed to issues with road safety.

The row of shops which the proposed site is part of sits in front of a parking bay which has a bus stop based just behind it on the road.

The inspector said on their visit they observed the bus waiting area being partially blocked by parked cars, obstructing a part of the road.

Due to limited parking spaces, the appellant said they would stop staff from parking near to the site and would require them get public transport to work.

However, the inspector expressed concern over how this would be controlled.

The inspector dismissed the appeal on June 14.

Almost 30 public objections were left on the planning application along with opposition from Liberal Democrat Cllr Dave Murphy for Crompton.

Reacting to the appeal's dismissal, he said: "For me it’s a right result; it should put this thing to bed for good.

"Thanks must go to the local residents who helped to get the message out there that they did not want this type of establishment.

"I am really pleased that we all played part keeping this area unique."
