A five-year-old boy is in need of an operation after he was hit by an off-road bike in Oldham, police said.

The boy was playing football off Kings Road, near Alexandra Park, at the time of the incident on Thursday, sustaining injuries to his leg and lip.

On Thursday, police arrested a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, then released him under investigation.

They are reassuring residents in the area that they are targeting all those who use an off-road bike, with extra resources allocated to Kings Road.

Chief Inspector Abigail Cronin, of GMP Oldham, said: "My thoughts are with the little boy who has been injured and I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

"We understand the frustration of the local community with this type of anti-social behaviour and we want them to know we are aware of it and have a plan in place to ensure that it is dealt with appropriately.

"We have secured extra resources and will apprehend and arrest anyone who is riding an off-road bike."
