Canal users in Chadderton have been told to prepare for delays of up to half an hour while work is carried out.

The Canal & Rivers Trust has warned users of both the canal and its towpath that they should be prepared to stop for ‘up to 30 minutes’ due to works taking place on a rail bridge.

Those using the canal have been told they should “approach the area with caution.”

The work is expected to take place from 7am on Tuesday, August 30 to 7pm on Friday, September 2.

The structure is located on the portion of the Rochdale canal in Chadderton going into Middleton, between the disused railway bridge and Lock 61 Scowcroft.

The Canal & Rivers Trust says third-party contractors working on behalf of Network Rail will be inspecting the railway bridge, but the canal and its towpath will remain open during the works.

Those using the canal should be prepared to stop if required, to allow equipment to be moved out of the way, the Trust says.

The disused rail bridge was originally built in 1863, for the Manchester to Leeds Company.
