A community hub has opened a free school uniform shop to help parents out during the cost-of-living crisis.

Burnley Together community hub has launched the initiative which is aimed at helping families get free school uniforms ahead of the start of the new academic year.

The Re-love your Pre-loved school uniform shop is opening in Burnley town centre tomorrow (August 15), where people can go and pick up items such as shirts and trousers that will be accepted at any primary or secondary school.

The scheme is open to anyone and is a great way of saving money as well as helping protect the environment by recycling and reducing waste.

Hub co-ordinator Nicola Larnach said: “We know buying new school uniform can be expensive and that a lot of uniforms are thrown away when a child either outgrows it or leaves school.

“Why let all those pre-loved uniforms go to waste when there are families out there who need to save money? We’re asking people to donate any school uniform items that are no longer needed so they can be put to good use again.

“We think it’s a great idea that should get top marks with families across our borough.”

Parents can get their hands on a set of uniform, including two polos or blouses, two pairs of trousers, shorts or skirts, a blazer, a PE kit and a pair of shoes. They will also have school dresses.

Clothing retail giant Primark is supporting the scheme by giving advice on how to set up the shop and by providing equipment such as clothing rails and hangers.

The hub will be open in Chancery Walk in Charter Walk Shopping Centre from Monday to Friday from August 15 until August 29. Opening hours will be between 11am and 3pm, apart from Thursday which will be between 2pm and 6pm.

The shop will be staffed by volunteers. Any donated items that are not deemed suitable for re-use will be recycled.

Donated school uniforms can be dropped off at the following locations: The Best Centre; Community Grocer, Valley Street community centre; Gannow community centre; Burnley Boys’ and Girls’ Club, Barden Lane; Burnley Wood community centre; Charter House, Morse Street; Tesco Extra, Burnley; Asda (George), Burnley; Healthier Heroes, Burnley Market; and Cabin Care and Share, The Fold.
