An Oldham Pride organiser has expressed his sadness at the need for additional security at a drag story time event.

Oldham Library confirmed to Oldham Pride organisers that extra security would be in place for the event.

The council says it looks forward to welcoming pantomime dame Mama G back to Oldham Library to read children’s storybooks to kids this October.

Those wishing to attend the event will be able to book online, and extra security is planned to be on site.

The news comes after police were called to a similar event in Bolton, due to a handful of  protesters shouting outside the sell-out show.

A fight broke out outside the event in Bolton, leading to police having to break it up.

A similar event in Rochdale was cancelled by Rochdale Borough Council before it was scheduled to take place earlier this month.

Cllr Louie Hamblett, who helps to organise Oldham Pride, said: "I think it’s sad that security is needed in today’s age.

“It’s an activity that's open to all and welcomed by both parents and children who attend for a morning or afternoon of storytime.

“All artists are fully DBS checked and library staff are also present.

“I hope everyone enjoys the event.”

A number of commenters on The Oldham Times Facebook page expressed their excitement at the event when it was announced – though several were opposed.

Commenter Natalie Rostron said: “Mama G is awesome. Their stories are of inclusion and acceptance.

“My daughter won a dress design competition over the summer and Mama G had it made. Everyone can learn from these xx.”

Commenter Tina Young said: “Brilliant!! Kids love stories and always should be encouraged to read!! Fortunately, children have no prejudices and enjoy it for what it is.”

An Oldham Council spokesperson said: “We look forward to welcoming back Mama G for her storytelling sessions in Oldham Library.

“The sessions are fun and provide something for all of the family to enjoy.

“Every event organised by the council is risk assessed as the safety of residents, visitors and our staff is a priority.

“As part of these checks, we look at what arrangements are needed on the day and draw up plans accordingly.”

Tickets for the event, which will take place in October, are not yet available.
