A CrossFit gym in Oldham is launching a programme to help cancer survivors build strength, fitness, and a support network post treatment.

CrossFit OL1 on Gould Street is running the fully funded 12-week Battle Cancer Program for the second time this year from Monday, September 26.

This month’s programme will be run by CrossFit OL1 coach Katie Lockey, 40, from Shaw, who has recently recovered from breast cancer and trained at the gym throughout her cancer treatment and chemotherapy.

Katie, who has been a member at the gym for the last five years, recently completed a coaching internship at CrossFit OL1 and is now working towards specialising in working with people undergoing treatment.

The Oldham Times:

The first programme run by the gym in association with the charity Battle Cancer earlier this year saw seven women of mixed ages from across Oldham take part and go on to compete at the fitness challenge Battle Cancer Manchester 2022.

Sam Touil, 37, from Oldham, who owns CrossFit OL1 with his wife Danielle, said: “Seeing how much it helps people mentally, socially, and physically, being involved in this programme has been one of the most rewarding experiences since opening our facility back in 2014.

“Coach Katie and the ladies who have taken part in the program have been a true inspiration to everyone at CFOL1.

"They should all be mega proud of everything they have achieved. We can't wait for our next program start.”

The couple are hoping for more people to sign up to the programme and have invested in a second training area.

Two sessions will be run at the gym per week on Mondays from 7.30pm to 8.30pm and Saturdays from 8am to 9am.

The programme is accessible to anyone who has completed treatment at least two months prior to the programme’s start date, however the gym considers every application to ensure it is safe for each person to participate.

Particular care must be taken for individuals who have brain or central nervous system-related cancers or anyone with two or more severe simultaneous diseases or medical conditions, particularly cardiovascular and neurological.

Movements can easily be adjusted to accommodate any mobility restrictions and workouts are designed so that each individual can work to their own ability and pace.
