Some Oldham residents have vented their frustrations over the mass closure of shops today, Monday.

Declared a bank holiday due to the Queen's funeral, many supermarkets, cafes, and other chains chose to close – including big names like McDonald’s, and Sainsbury’s have shut their doors.

A number of pubs remained open, with many choosing to show the Queen’s funeral.

Not everyone was happy about shops being shut.

Enver Sula is a self-employed construction worker, who spends weekends in Oldham to visit his daughters.

Because of the bank holiday, Enver missed out on a day’s wage.

Saying he is already struggling to cover his rent, Enver said he would be working today had it not been for the bank holiday.

Travelling to London ahead of work on Tuesday, Enver had been hoping to grab breakfast at McDonald’s – only finding out about the closure when he got to the locked door.

He said: “I think it’s just terrible, it’s not good.

“I don’t understand, the Queen has died and they’ve shut the country down – I don’t know where everybody is, really?

“I just wanted some breakfast. Where can you go? They open later but I have to leave for London now, it’s not good.”

He wasn’t the only one – with many other people seen trying to open the McDonald’s door in the morning.

Other shops in Oldham appeared to be in varying states of closure.

Boots in Oldham kept its pharmacy open, but shut the main shop – only allowing three people in at a time, causing a short queue to form outdoors.

While locked, KFC clearly had workers inside, who appeared to be cleaning the restaurant ready for a later opening.

By 2pm, KFC and Costa in Oldham had already reopened their doors, while McDonald’s was set to remain closed until 5pm.
