A North West chain of menswear shops is opening a branch in Oldham.

Established in Rochdale in 1959, Hope menswear was originally called Denis Hope – sharing its name with the founder.

Now, the shop is opening a new branch in Uppermill on Friday (September 30).

The business recently decided to move out of its original Rochdale town centre location after more than 60 years.

It now has a branch in Norden, offering a range of formal and casual clothing.

Oliver Hope, the late founder’s grandson, said the Uppermill branch would keep things casual, and focus on customer service.

The 37-year-old said: “The majority of the stock we will do at Uppermill will be more on the casual side of things, whereas we have a massive tailoring business at the Norden store.

“The thinking behind that is that while it’s a decent-sized shop, we don’t want to put too much stuff in it, and the Norden store is a 25-minute drive away if someone does want a suit.

“We’ve got a lot of customers from Saddleworth who make the journey over to us in Norden as there’s not really anywhere locally where guys can get something without venturing too far.”

The new shop will be located on Uppermill’s High Street in The Globe building, opposite Caffè Grande Abaco.

Oliver said he was excited the brand was returning to Oldham, saying: “We’re looking forward to it, it’s been a bit of a test with how things are at the moment, getting materials to do things is really difficult at the moment, everything’s taking longer.

“Ideally we were looking at opening far earlier in the year, getting the remaining bits of the shop fit took forever, so we decided to wait until the Autumn/Winter stock came in rather than rushing to get it open for the summer.”

Eager customers have already been trying to visit the new shop.

Oliver said: “There’s certainly been a great response from people locally who have seen me coming and going, doing bits to the shop.

“When we put the signage up outside we probably had 10 or 15 people come into the shop even though there was no stock in it, they’d just seen the sign go up.

“That in itself is positive and reassuring – that people will come through the doors.”

Hope Menswear opens its doors on Uppermill’s High Street on Friday from 11am to 6pm.

For the opening weekend, the shop will be open 10am to 5pm on Saturday, October 1, and 11am to 4pm on Sunday, October 2.

Regularly, the shop will be shut on Mondays and Tuesdays, and open 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 4pm on Sundays.
