Members of the public reported a large police presence across Oldham today as officers launched day two of a travel safe initiative.

Residents saw a large police presence across the borough, particularly in Chadderton and Royton, as part of Greater Manchester Police's Operation Avro.

The operation saw officers in Oldham actively targeting motorists in a bid to remove uninsured vehicles from the road.

A post online by GMP showed police had seized and recovered an one uninsured van.

Images show the vehicle being towed away after it was allegedly transporting goods into Royton.

Yesterday (Tuesday), GMP arrested nine people across Greater Manchester, including arrests for offences related to disqualified drivers, drink drivers, drug drivers and shoplifting.

Oldhamers said the borough was "flooded with police" today in the area around Elk Mill and at Clayton Playing Fields.

One man said he was driving past on his way to work when he saw “half a dozen police vans, a couple of motorcycles and some policemen on foot directing random cars into the car park”.

A series of Tweets posted by GMP read: "WATCH. Superintendent Dave Pester welcomes day two of #OpAVRO focusing on policing the transport network across Greater Manchester."

A second Tweet added: "We're actively targeting uninsured vehicles using our roads illegally in Greater Manchester.

"As part of our ongoing traffic operation for #OpAVRO, we've taken an uninsured van that was transporting goods in the Royton area off the roads.

"The van has now been seized and recovered."
