September has seen several Oldham men sentenced before the courts, and The Oldham Times has gathered some of the most notable cases.

A ‘calculated’ Oldham headteacher sexually abused 19 boys in ‘plain sight’ over more than a decade.

Christopher Pickup, of Underwood Way in Shaw, was jailed for 10 years at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on September 2, after being convicted by a jury of 37 sexual offences against 19 prepubescent boys over a 12-year period.

The 76-year-old was also ordered to pay £58,760 in prosecution costs and placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.

Pickup committed the offences while working as a teacher at primary schools in the Oldham area from 1971 to 1983.

In total 19 boys “fell prey” to Pickup’s sexual abuse which occurred across a number of school-related settings.

Judge Baxter commended the victims for coming forward and speaking out and said that the “very least they deserved was an apology” from Pickup but that “sadly” he refused to give one and did not show “one jot of remorse or regret”.

A 76-year-old sex offender breached his restraining order to allow boys to smoke cannabis and cigarettes in his flat, a court has heard.

Derek Clayton of Unsworth Way, Oldham, was handed a two-year suspended sentence at Minshull Street Crown Court on September 12, for 12 offences that breached a restraining order imposed on him in 2002.

The court heard how over a two-week period from May 14 to May 29 Clayton had three boys under the age of 18 in his flat, including one that was just 12, and permitted them to smoke cannabis and cigarettes.

He was arrested and charged with 12 breaches of his restraining order on July 15.

Judge Savill went on to say that the order placed on Clayton was intended to prevent “high risk” situations and "temptation getting the better of him" and deemed Clayton’s most recent offence “serious” due to his history of previous sexual offending and “very bad record”.

An Oldham man has been sentenced over child sexual images.

Paul Yarwood of Alt Lane appeared at Minshull Street Crown Court on September 26 after pleading guilty to three counts of making an indecent photograph/pseudo-photograph of a child.

He was given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years and was given a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement and ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work.

The 35-year-old has also been subjected to a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) for seven years and placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for seven years.
