Angela Rayner has said the Prime Minister has "demonstrated why she can't be trusted with Britain's economy" after Liz Truss' series of interviews on BBC Radio.

The Ashton-under-Lyne and Failsworth MP tweeted her reaction after the PM took part in a round of interviews with local BBC Radio stations on Thursday (September 29) morning.

She added that Ms Truss had broken her "long painful silence" with "short painful silences", referring to the PM's interviews in which she took a few seconds to answer some questions.

The PM was speaking publicly for the first time since Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng's mini-budget announcement on Friday, which sent the British economy into "free-fall" according to Ms Rayner.

In her tweet, Ms Rayner said: "Liz Truss has finally broken her long painful silence with a series of short painful silences.

"People desperately needed reassurance on prices, mortgages and pensions.

"She's demonstrated why she can't be trusted with Britain's economy."

This follows another one of Ms Rayner's tongue-in-cheek comments on Wednesday, when she said the PM had "crashed the pork market".

The comment referenced a previous speech from Liz Truss when she enthusiastically said she would be opening pork markets in China.
