A woman has been arrested and a police investigation is underway after a child became ‘critically ill’ at a nursery on Main Road in Oldham.

The child became ill at the nursery last week and a woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault and child cruelty, police have confirmed.

Just after 4.30pm today (Thursday) GMP Oldham Tweeted: “We've started an investigation with Oldham Council and Ofsted after a child became critically ill at a nursery on Maine Road last week.

“A woman's been arrested on suspicion of assault and child cruelty.”

In an additional statement, GMP tweeted: "We currently believe this is an isolated incident and our Oldham Child Protection Unit are working closely with partners as part of this ongoing investigation.

"We're also supporting the child's family as her condition remains serious but thankfully stable in hospital."

Greater Manchester Police has not confirmed the name of the nursery, however, as The Oldham Times reported yesterday Ofsted has suspended Kids Around The Clock nursery in Chadderton from September 27 to November 7 due to an investigation.

It is located on Main Road.

A notice of suspension letter sent to the nursery from Ofsted reads: “The purpose of suspension is to allow time to investigate our belief that a child may be exposed to a risk of harm and for any necessary steps to be taken to eliminate or reduce the risk of harm.

“We will regularly review the situation and will stop the suspension within this period if we believe children are no longer at risk.”

A spokesperson from Ofsted said: “We have suspended the nursery while other agencies conduct their enquiries. We are unable to comment further at this time.”
