Nine vehicles have been seized and more than 30 traffic offences recorded after a police crackdown in Oldham on Wednesday.

Officers descended on the borough for a travel safe initiative as part of GMP’s Operation Avro.

A Tweet published by GMP Traffic on Thursday reads: “Nine vehicles were seized, and 32 traffic offence reports/summons issued during our traffic operation in Oldham”.

Members of the public reported a large police presence across the borough on the day of the operation, particularly in Chadderton and Royton.

Oldhamers also said the borough was "flooded with police" in the area around Elk Mill and at Clayton Playing Fields.

One man said he was driving past on his way to work when he saw “half a dozen police vans, a couple of motorcycles and some policemen on foot directing random cars into the car park”.

The operation saw officers in Oldham actively targeting motorists in a bid to remove uninsured vehicles from the road.

On the first day of the operation on Tuesday, GMP arrested nine people across Greater Manchester, including arrests for offences related to disqualified drivers, drink drivers, drug drivers and shoplifting.

A series of Tweets posted by GMP read: " Superintendent Dave Pester welcomes day two of Op Avro focusing on policing the transport network across Greater Manchester."

A second Tweet added: "We're actively targeting uninsured vehicles using our roads illegally in Greater Manchester.

"As part of our ongoing traffic operation for #OpAVRO, we've taken an uninsured van that was transporting goods in the Royton area off the roads.

"The van has now been seized and recovered."
