A baby girl remains in a serious condition after an incident at an Oldham nursery.

The seven-month-old became ‘critically ill’ at the nursery located on Main Road last week and a woman was arrested on suspicion of assault and child cruelty, police confirmed yesterday.

She has since been bailed while an investigation into the incident takes place.

North West Ambulance Service confirmed the incident took place at Kids Around the Clock nursery.

Ofsted has suspended the nursery in Chadderton from September 27 to November 7 due to an investigation.

North West Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 15:39 to a medical incident at Kids Around the Clock Nursery.

“We took a 7 month old patient to hospital.”

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: “We are conducting an investigation with support from partners at Oldham Council and Ofsted relating to a suspected incident at a nursery on Main Road in Oldham after a child became critically ill last week.

“A woman in her 30s has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and child cruelty.

“She has since been interviewed before being released on bail with strict conditions.

“We were initially called by colleagues at NWAS at 3.45pm on 21 September to a report that a seven-month-old girl was critically ill and being taken from the nursery to hospital – where she remains in a serious but thankfully stable condition.

“The child’s parents are being kept updated and are being supported by our investigation team at this distressing time."

It continued: “Extensive enquiries continue to be conducted to establish the circumstances of how the child’s condition deteriorated.

“We currently believe this is an isolated incident and detectives from our Oldham Child Protection Unit are working closely with all necessary partners as part of this ongoing investigation.

“Criminal proceedings are active and we therefore urge people to refrain from speculation and commentary online.”

A notice of suspension letter sent to the nursery from Ofsted reads: “The purpose of suspension is to allow time to investigate our belief that a child may be exposed to a risk of harm and for any necessary steps to be taken to eliminate or reduce the risk of harm.

“We will regularly review the situation and will stop the suspension within this period if we believe children are no longer at risk.”

A spokesperson from Ofsted said: “We have suspended the nursery while other agencies conduct their enquiries. We are unable to comment further at this time.”
