Two projects in Oldham are amongst 21 schemes across Greater Manchester which have received funding that aims to create local green spaces.

As part of the Green Spaces Fund, nearly £400,000 has been awarded to the 21 schemes by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

With at least one project being granted funding in each borough, the fund aims to improve and create more accessible, nature-rich green spaces throughout the region for residents to enjoy.

The first project in Oldham to be awarded funding is a community garden which will look to increase the health and wellbeing of the community who will benefit from the outdoor space, particularly those who have no access to green space in their own homes.

The second project will be a mindfulness corner, which will be a green space providing a comfortable location for the community to reflect and practice mindfulness to improve mental wellbeing.

This project will also aim to encourage elderly members of the community to experience the outdoors, socialise, and maintain their physical and mental wellbeing in a safe and familiar setting.

The locations of the projects are currently unknown.

The projects to obtain funding were announced at the Greater Manchester Green Summit on Sunday, October 17 by Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

He said: "I’m so pleased at the wide range of schemes we’ve been able to support through the first round of the Green Spaces Fund. It’s also great to see every Greater Manchester borough benefit in some way.

"Everyone should have access to some kind of green space, whether it’s a place to grow fresh food, plant trees, meet new people, learn new skills or simply enjoy being close to nature.

"I’m really proud to see local people taking ownership of such fantastic projects that add value to their community and the environment and that’s what the Green Spaces Fund is all about."

Mr Burnham announced that the second round of funding will be launched soon and encouraged anyone who wants to improve or create a green space in their area to apply.

Applications for the Green Space Fund reopen for a second round on October 31 with two types of grants available: grants for up to £10,000 and grants between £10,000 and £40,000.
