A "malnourished" dog who was living in a "hazardous environment with broken glass on the floor" has been rescued by police.

Officers in Royton spotted the dog living in poor conditions and gained entry to the property it was in.

After looking at the state of the place she was staying in, police used powers under the Animal Welfare Act to seize the pooch.

She was "very happy to see officers and enjoyed a walk and some food" before waiting to be seen by a vet.

A police spokesperson said: "Royton neighbourhood officers PC Peddar and PC Ramzan while making enquires on an unrelated matter came across a dog which was clearly malnourished with her ribs showing and living in a hazardous environment with broken glass on the floor.

"Police powers to protect animals were used to gain entry, there was no dog food in the flat and a pot of noodles appeared to be her last meal it was also apparent that the dog had not been taken out much (use your imagination!)

"She was very happy to see officers and enjoyed a walk and some food while waiting for a trip to the vets to get checked out.

"Seized under the Animal Welfare Act."
