A popular live music venue which has been at the heart of Oldham for more than a decade has shared its thoughts on an 'exceptional' 2022.

Whittles at Tokyo on Roscoe Street is a hub of live music in an iconic venue, hosting everyone from tribute acts to legends and up-and-coming local artists.

Initially on King Street, the venue only moved into the former Tokyo Project nightclub on November 29, 2019, and faced uncertainty and the threat of closure amid the pandemic.

But it survived through it all and has now shared its big review of 2022 on social media as it looks back over its jam-packed year.

The post read: "The year began with a good old mix of disco, rock and even a country and western fix.

"We continued into springtime with tributes galore with the likes of Pink, Bon Jovi, UB40 and so much more.

"Whittles was finally buzzing and we all had a blast with singing and dancing which we could all do - at last."

Summer was also monumental for the venue as it invited local bands to "sing, play, jam and create their own vibe" on its outdoor Viking stage.

The post continued: "The Viking stage outdoors was a special place to go - from band nights, festivals and the great Liam Morris memorial, we’re right in saying the music was exceptional.

"Birthdays have been celebrated for all of the ages.

"Thank you to the guest that came along and helped turn the pages.

"We’ve had Viking Fest, Donningtokes and of course the Big One.

"We’re talking SOS with 29 bands inside and out - could we pull it off? There was never a doubt."

The Whittles team, comprised of Neil, Heather, John, Wendie and Jean, extended their thanks to customers and residents for "being on our journey of 2022".

They also issued a "special thanks" to Mark on security, sound engineers Paul, Gary and Colin, Neil for lighting and "always being on call", its "wonderful" bar staff and, finally, "each and every band that has graced our stage".

"Wishing you all the very best for 2023", the post concluded.

Loyal customers, bands and performers flocked to the post to hail the venue and year as "the best ever".

One man said: "You make me feel so welcome. So looking forward to another great year with you all."

Another music fan wrote: "Thank you for the amazing job you all do. I would not go anywhere else."

"Absolutely amazing place - it's my second home", another resident wrote.
