Footage captured by concerned residents in Royton reveals a street has become overwhelmed with rubbish and fly-tipping after a river burst its bank.

Members of the public have claimed New Coin Street in Royton, near Oldham Academy North, has become a hotspot for fly-tipping in recent weeks with fears mounting the piles of waste pose a danger to school children.

Shocking footage captured by residents reveal the extent of the rubbish with household waste piled high.

Photographs show a bathtub and sofa had recently been discarded there.

However, the street and nearby Holden Fold Lane also fell victim to a flood after the river burst its banks on New Year's Day, dredging up rubbish with it.

Rose Hanley, who recorded the littered lane, said the river rose above street level "due to the amount of rubbish tipped into it".

"The passage is blocked so the river has risen and carried the rubbish down the road and deposited onto Holden Lane.

"The water flows all the way down, making it difficult for people to cross the road", she added.

Another man said a dumped sofa was causing a blockage while fly-tippers continually "keep adding" to the problem.

Meanwhile, another woman said on social media that the area had become a "dumping ground" in the last five years.

She said: "I walk over to the retail park and past it frequently.

"It should have CCTV on it to hit them with massive fines."

While Rose said a lot of the piles of rubbish had been cleared as of Tuesday, January 10, there remains evidence of larger items that have been dumped in the wooded areas.

Oldham Council has been approached for comment.
