An Oldham man who stole twice from a jewellery store and robbed an elderly man to finance his drug habit has been jailed.

Tajan Uddin, of Hereford Street, Chadderton, was convicted of two counts of theft, possession of a Class B drug and robbery at Manchester Magistrates' Court on January 5.

On Tuesday, January 24, he appeared at Minshull Street Crown Court to be sentenced.

Prosecution counsel Emmanuel Coniah told the court Uddin's offending began on March 22 last year, when he entered the H. Samuel store in Spindles Shopping Centre and stole a gold chain valued at £650.

Just over a week later, the 41-year-old "had the cheek", as Judge Mark Savill described it, to return to the same shop and once again steal a gold chain, this time valued at £430.

As Uddin rushed out of the store, he caused a shop worker to fall and suffer an injury to her right wrist.

On August 15, Uddin's thefts continued when, whilst in a Co-operative bank, he "took his opportunity" and stole £1,000 which a cashier had put on a desk.

He was arrested on released on bail the next day, however just two weeks later, on August 29, Uddin committed his "most serious offence", according to Judge Savill.

Uddin was on the same bus as an elderly man who he followed to a cash point before grabbing the money the man withdrew and running off.

According to the victim's personal statement, he has been left traumatised by the incident and no longer wants to go out.

Judge Savill said Uddin, who was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident, was "the sole cause" for the victim's trauma.

He said Uddin had carried out the offences to get money to pay for his drug habit, which had worsened in recent years.

Defence counsel, Zoe Dawson, explained that Uddin, who is a father, suffered from schizophrenia, which Judge Savill accepted as a mitigating factor when passing sentence.

In total, Uddin was sentenced to a maximum of two years in jail.
