A popular pub in Oldham is set to close next month due to “unsustainable costs and dwindling numbers”.

The Coach and Horses Pub on Huddersfield Road Waterhead has announced it will be closing its doors for good on March 31.

The pub held its last ever themed party on Saturday (February 11) to mark Valentine’s Day and give punters the chance to say, “hi or bye” and “dance the night away”.

Posting on Facebook, the pub, which calls itself the “best stocked bar around”, described the night as “bittersweet”.

The pub said: “It’s a bittersweet night tonight. It’s our last themed party before we close our doors for good on the March 31 due to unsustainable costs and dwindling numbers.

“So, we are going to celebrate Valentine’s night in our signature style with karaoke and great tunes with Sazzle and Jo. We have great drinks offers so if you fancy saying hi or bye come and dance the night away.”

Commenters on Facebook have shared their sadness and shock over the closure which has been described as an “end of an era”.

Wendy Taylor said: “It is sad … another lovely community pub gone. My grandad played his squeeze box here, many many decades ago… my mum was a barmaid here when the Shelton’s had it. Lots of good memories.”

Echoing her comments, Wendy Perry said: “Very very sad! This has been my dad’s local pub for over 40 years. Let’s hope it stays open as a pub when someone buys it”.

Duncan Taylor said: “Made some lifelong memories in here. Will be sad to see it go.”

Angela Cavey added: “Really sorry to hear this, it feels like the end of an era.”

The pub was known for playing live sport, live music, and holding karaoke nights with darts and pool also available.
