A young team has raised more than £300 as part of a community project to improve an Ashton centre helping those with drug and alcohol addictions.

As part of a 12-week programme, young people taking part in the Prince’s Trust scheme undertake a community project.

This year’s Oldham and Hyde team chose to complete their community project at the Town House Shelter in Ashton.

The Town House is a drop-in centre to help vulnerable people who are struggling, such as those with drug and alcohol addictions, people who are homeless, veterans and people with mental health conditions.

Additionally, the centre helps supply the Tameside area with food banks.

The Oldham and Hyde Prince’s Trust teams decided to re-paint the kitchen and hallway to create a nicer environment for the service users as part of the project.

In October, a previous team helped to renovate an Oldham church’s outdoor area.

In order to raise money for the project, the team completed a fundraising day, earning more than £300.

According to the team, this meant they could buy ‘plenty of supplies’.

The project took two weeks in total.

Writing about their experience, team members Tony Griffiths and Dan Sidgwick said: “Throughout the two weeks the team has been hard at work every day painting.

“On the Friday, we handed the finished project back to the Town House and celebrated by inviting friends and family to review the hard work that’s been done.

“The teamwork within the group was sometimes difficult, and the task of painting often became tiring however the team came together as a whole in the end to produce a well-pieced-together project for the local community.”
