World Book Day is being celebrated by pupils in primary schools across Oldham today.

Children throughout the borough are marking the day by dressing up as characters from the world of fiction.

The much-loved event is a highlight in the school calendar and the theme for this year is making it 'your' World Book Day.

The aim of the day, which this year celebrates its 26th anniversary, is to get children of all ages to come together and share the joy of reading.

Oldham schools are running book-themes activities and lessons throughout the day.

Greenacres Primary Academy on Dunkerley Street has based its theme on the book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt.

Students have come to school dressed in every colour from the rainbow.

Over at Woodlands Primary Academy on Broadbent Road children have dressed as their favourite fictional characters including Mary Poppins, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Peter Rabbit, Harry Potter, Pinocchio, and Little Red Riding Hood.

Oldham Athletic is also marking World Book Day 2023 by giving away 180 free books to primary schools in the borough.

The books are being gifted as part of the Premier League Primary Stars education programme and Oldham Athletic players Harrison McGahey and Chris Porter will be helping to deliver the free books.

Other players have also marked the day, including Mike Fondop who has been reading to his daughter, and Ben Tollitt whose children have dressed as their favourite book characters for school and nursery.
