It’s the first full week in March, which makes it British Pie Week.

The hotly anticipated British Pie Awards are set to reveal a winner from 900 entries on Friday, March 10.

In the spirit of the week, we asked you to tell us the best places to grab a pie in Oldham on our Facebook page – and one Oldham pie institution received a lot of support.

We received a lot of comments – so here are some places which received more than one mention, ranked in order of comments.

Fourth place

In joint fourth place with two mentions each were Little Saddleworth Pie Company and Grains Bar Hotel.

Little Saddleworth Pie Company

In 2019, the company, based in Greenfield, makes a special wedding cake pie consisting of seven tiers, made up of four pies and three cheeses, as they did for one lucky couple in 2019.

Grains Bar Hotel

This hotel makes pies. Commenter Alan Jones called the pies ‘really nice.’

As well their pies, Grains Bar was also nominated for a Wedding Industry Award last year.

Third place

In joint third place, with three mentions each, were Arundel Bakery, Grandma Madden’s, and Jayne’s Deli.

Arundel Bakery

Located on Greenacres Road in Lees, this much-loved Oldham bakery supplies its pies for fixtures at Boundary Park.

Grandma Madden’s Kitchen

Located in the Interclubbers Bar, Grandma Madden’s supplied food to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in a town-centre street party last year.

Jayne’s Deli

Located in Tommyfield Market Hall, Jayne’s Deli offers a range of cheeses and meats, as well as pies. The deli also boasts a five-star food hygiene rating – the best available mark.

Facebook commenter Dianne Orman praised their pork pies.

Second place

In joint second place were Village Manor bakery and Tunnel End Pie Co, with four mentions each.

Tunnel End Pie Co nominated itself in our comments, though we never said this wasn’t allowed.

However, the company seems to know what it’s talking about.

Started in September 2021, Tunnel End Pie Co took home two Silver Awards for its Cheese and Onion Pie and its Pork and Hot Scotch Bonnet Chutney Pie at last year’s British Pie Awards, just months after opening.

First place

And in first place, with an astonishing 26 mentions, was the Old Mill House restaurant, run by Joan Cartwright.

The restaurant made headlines in October after it was forced to raise prices due to rising costs of ingredients, with Joan fearing the restaurant would have to close.

The Saddleworth eatery sells ‘old fashioned’ homemade meals and delivers pies to the community.

Joan and the team get to work baking a wide variety of rag puddings, pies and quiches every morning from 6am.

The British Pie Awards announce this year’s winners on Friday, March 10.
