A new youth hub has been launched in Oldham to get young people into work or education.

Young people aged between 16 to 25 are invited to come to the new base of the hub in the Get Oldham Working offices to seek employment support.

The Youth Hub headquarters is based on the ground floor of the First Choice Homes building on 22 Union Street and is open 9am to 5pm on Monday to Friday.

Positive Steps also have a focused careers drop-in for 16 to 18-year-olds on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

The initiative hopes to support young people to find employment, make a career change or re-engage in education o training at a level that suits them.

Those who attend gain access to career advice from Get Oldham Working, Positive Steps and from a dedicated Youth Job Centre Plus worker.

From there, staff can support young people by lodging referrals and by making enquiries to relevant agencies to assist them further.

At the event, various organisations pledged their support to Oldham's young people.

Cllr Shoab Akhtar, cabinet member for employment and enterprise at the council, said: “The youth hub is so important to our young people of Oldham as it will be a hub where they can get advice and support from organisations under one roof.

“I encourage others to get involved in the Youth Hub, by pledging to how you will plan on supporting the youth of Oldham."

The councillor also had a "message" to Oldham's youth, saying: "If you’re looking to get a job, change career, or go back to learning, get in touch with the youth hub.

“Members of the team will support you to get you where you want to be on your path to a career.

“The hub is part of our wider strategy of the council’s commitment to support children and young people to get the best start in life.”
