It's that time of year again to catch scarecrows sprouting up across Diggle - and this year makes for a promising line-up of celebs and musicians.

The hotly anticipated Easter event sees scarecrows stationed around the village on a dedicated trail.

Creators who take part are awarded the opportunity to take home the scarecrow crown - and a prize.

Taking place between April 1 and April 16 this year, residents have been busy creating their hilarious (and some harrowing) creations to the theme of 'music'.

From popstars and rockstars to the creepy 'Nirvana baby', here are just some scarecrows that have been spotted so far that could be in with a chance of bagging the prize.

Manchester music icons

There couldn't possibly be a music-themed scarecrow trail without a reference to some of Manchester's very own legends.

These residents are clearly 'mad fer it' having filled their drive with Oasis' Liam and Noel Gallagher, Bez from The Happy Mondays, Ian Brown from The Stone Roses, Tim Booth from James and Morrissey from The Smiths - each with their own stage underneath a Hacienda-themed gazebo.

The handmade sign pointing to some Manchester landmarks, such as Afflecks, Salford Lads Club, Factory and 42s nightclub, is a nice added touch.

Nirvana baby

Arguably the most innovative and niche scarecrow to emerge so far is the Nirvana baby.

In reference to the band's Nevermind album, which features a naked baby submerged in water in reach of a dollar bill, the ingenious Diggle scarecrow shows a giant baby suspended from a tree.

With a perhaps slightly more serious look on its face, and even scarier during the daytime, the scarecrow baby makes a convincing recreation of the album cover, with fairy lights to replicate the water and a dollar bill hanging from a nearby branch.

Personally, this one would get my vote.

Did you miss out on Glasto tickets this year?

Fear not, because scare-Sheeran can be spied here in Diggle with his own Glastonbury tent from 2017 when the human Ed was a headline act.

The co-creator of the festival, Michael Eavis, can also be found lurking around the area as a bonus Easter egg.

The Spice Girls

Next up is the Spice Girls whose faces have been swapped for spices - seemingly in Sainsbury's style.

However, the girl group can still be identified by their clothes and hair.

Paprika, wearing shorts, points to Sporty Spice (Mel C) while Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell) is clearly identified by the red 'hair' and signature England flag dress.

Baby Spice (Emma Bunton) is dressed as Cumin, in pink, the Chilli in animal print screams Scary Spice (Mel B) while Victoria Beckham, Posh Spice, can be seen donning the Tumeric bottle while in all black.

The Beatles

Last but certainly not least is The Beatles which have cunningly been crafted into a band of bugs.

With antennas and wings, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr can be spied with their instruments on the trail.

Even Abbey Road can also be found elsewhere on the walk.

About the trail

This is by no means a list of all the ingenious scarecrows to be found with more than 30 dotted around the village.

There's Freddie Mercury, Prince, Dolly Parton, Elton John, David Bowie and even some local legends - the Diggle School Band and Chav Brass - to be found, amongst others.

The trail is run by Friends of Diggle School, a registered charity which ensures every pound and penny raised from the trail goes back to the school.

Trail sheets can be gathered from Grandpa Greene's, The Diggle Hotel and The Gate Inn for just £3 while parking is free at Saddleworth School for the duration of the event.
