An Oldham nursery has seen its fortunes change after staff worked ‘extremely hard’ to address issues raised in the previous inspection.

Oberlin Street Nursery, located on Greenacres Road, had been rated ‘requires improvement’ in summer last year.

Now, following the publication of a new report this week, the nursery has been updated to a ‘good’ rating.

Last year, the nursery was told it had to improve in a report which criticised leadership for not effectively deploying staff.

The report added that the curriculum was ‘in its infancy’.

However, the situation has turned around for the nursery.

Inspector Layla Davies gave the nursery a ‘good’ rating, with children said to ‘thoroughly enjoy’ their time in the ‘small and welcoming nursery’.

Inspectors noted that children tend to pet snails and hand-reared chicks, demonstrating sensitivity and care towards the animals.

Additionally, pre-school children were noted as setting the table for lunch with cloth, candles and flowers – something which the inspector praised as providing the children with ‘independence and social skills needed in preparation for life in modern Britain’.

Children were seen happily singing songs and rhymes, and babies understood simple instructions at the nursery.

Inspector Davies identified that staff had worked ‘extremely hard’ to address issues raised at the previous inspection, with children said to be well-supervised and pre-school children well prepared for writing in school.

Staff now have time away from their day job to complete tasks such as planning or development assessments, limiting time taken away from the children. The inspector said children were ‘supervised well’ throughout the session.

The curriculum at the nursery was praised for being ‘broad and balanced’, though some activities were not focused on what leaders intend, according to the report.

Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities were said to be supported very well, with staff working closely with parents and professionals to provide timely support.
