Police were given more power to carry out stop and search checks in Derker last night, Monday, after reports of groups of men fighting, damaging cars and causing a disturbance.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said that a section 60 order, which gives officers extra powers to stop and search people, following the reports of crimes in the area on Sunday.

The stop and search checks ran for nine hours and 30 minutes and ended at 2am this morning, Tuesday, and included a strict boundary within the area.

The areas included the A672 at Derker Street to Clyde Street, Clyde Street into Whetstone Hill Road and Vulcan Street, Vulcan Street to Buxton Road, Buxton Road to Stoneleigh Street and from Stoneleigh Street to Derker Street.

Police arrested two people on suspicion of possessing offensive weapons.

GMP added that "highly visible patrols" will remain in the area to provide reassurance to residents.

Inspector Anthony Allt from GMP’s Oldham Division said: “We believe that this section 60 order is appropriate and necessary to reassure those in the Derker community and to keep people safe.

“Officers will be out in the coming days to ensure that there is a highly visible police presence and to deter any criminality from the streets.”
