A route for boats on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in Uppermill has reopened following successful repairs.

The route was closed for more than 36 hours due to issues with the lock cill, caused by "boat damage".

Markers at canal locks tell boaters to keep clear of cills, or else damage can occur to a boat.

Cills are protruding stones or concrete ledges below water close to a lock gate.

Usually near the top gate at the higher end of the chamber, unaware boaters can have their rudder get stuck on the cill when travelling down the gradient, or the bow of their boat can get stuck on it when travelling up the canal.

This can mean that one part of the boat will continue descending in the lock, while the rest of the boat is stuck, which can cause damage.

Damage to the cill itself can cause leaks.
