A voluntary rescue team which usually comes to the aid of injured walkers was called out to assist a deer that had become trapped in a reservoir.

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team said it attended an incident on Monday (June 12) after receiving calls from concerned members of the public about a "rather unusual casualty".

Once the team mobilised into action, it discovered a deer or suspected fawn had managed to get stuck in the Ashway Gap overflow in Dovestone reservoir.

The team decided to leave the deer for a short time to see if it would manage to make its own way out.

However, they found the doe hadn't ventured any further to where the walls were lower, meaning it was stranded as its "little legs couldn't quite make the jump up the higher walls".

Using a rope, the water team of OMRT lowered themselves into the overflow and encouraged the young deer downstream towards the reservoir.

After the gentle encouragement, the team said it found "some extra spring in its legs" and jumped up where it "hoofed off into the grass".

"A fawn-tastic outcome", the team said in a post celebrating the rescue on social media.

"Whilst enjoying the sunshine, remember the basics folks - tell someone where you are going, check the route is within your capabilities and, importantly, if you climb up or down somewhere, make sure you can make your own way back", the team added.
