The community's town crier has been invited on the national ITV show, Britain's Got Talent, to film a town cry.

Marcus Emms has been the town crier for Shaw and Crompton for five years, having only just passed the major milestone earlier this month (June 17).

The 52-year-old, who lives in High Crompton, is well known across the borough for announcing joyous events across the community - and his booming voice.

Marcus attends local civic events all year round, as well as birthdays and anniversaries, but has local legend status as the borough's Santa Claus during Christmas time, which he has been doing since 2003.

Now, the father has been invited to another exciting event - this time on ITV's hit talent show, Britain's Got Talent.

The town crier said in a post on social media: "Become Shaw and Crompton town crier and get involved in all sorts of shenanigans.

"Years ago, I got a phone call off Yoko Ono to appear in Bells of Peace.

"In February, I thought the radio interview and breakfast TV thing was nuts.

"Then there's this", he added as he revealed an invitation by ITV bosses.

The invite read: "We are looking to film a variety of people across the UK.

"We will be visiting small towns near Manchester and filming specific acts as part of a VT for the next series.

"We would love to include a town crier as part of the VT."

The confirmation comes as it remained up in the air if Marcus would definitely get the gig.

He said producers initially asked him to appear in Knutsford, which has its own town crier, and then said he lived too far away for filming.

"There are only 200 official town criers in the country so out of common courtesy, I put them in touch with the Knutsford town crier, Julie Mitchell.

"They asked loads of town criers for Britain's Got Talent.

"I said yes and they said I live too far away, but everyone else has been saying no to them," Marcus said.

Then, he revealed he has been given the go-ahead and will be travelling to Knutsford to film his famous town cry for the show next month.

In a post on social media, he said: "It's confirmed.

"Massive thank you must go to Knutsford town crier, Julie Mitchell, and her husband, Chester's world-famous town crier, David Mitchell, for their endorsement and support for allowing me to represent our beautiful little town.

"I'm definitely going to be shouting Shaw and Crompton with pride", he added.
