The Tour of Britain cycling event is returning to Oldham for the first time in four years, with elite riders set to take on the challenging terrain of the borough.

The world-renowned multi-stage event is regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious cycling races and will be back in Greater Manchester for the first time since 2019.

Some of the best riders from across the globe will be taking on the Oldham route alongside Olympic, world and Tour de France champions.

Greater Manchester is hosting stage one of the UK's biggest professional cycling race, or the "Grand Depart" as it is called, on September 3.

Oldham is likely to be one of the highlights of the Altrincham to Manchester route due to its steep hills, winding roads and frequently high winds, which cyclists will surely relish.

Residents and businesses in the borough are being encouraged to show support of the event and cheer on the cyclists.

Oldham Council says the inclusion of the borough in the Tour of Britain shows its commitment to promoting health, fitness, and sport among residents.

The council hopes the event will inspire residents of all ages to take part in cycling, lead an active lifestyle and take advantage of the borough’s adventurous terrains.

Cllr Peter Dean, Cabinet member for communities and culture, said: "We are thrilled to be part of this monumental event and to welcome the Tour of Britain back to Oldham.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the beauty of our town to a global audience, and we look forward to the energy and excitement that the race will undoubtedly bring to residents, visitors, businesses and all those taking part."

Greater Manchester will host a weekend of cycling events, activities and community engagement, and any Tour of Britain activities and promotions taking place in Oldham will be published on the I Love Oldham Facebook Page.

The Tour has contributed £27.6m each year to the UK economy, according to research by Frontline, with the council set to work with business to maximise their opportunities and stimulate the local economy.

While spectators are encouraged to join in the action by watching from the roadside, ITV4 will broadcast live flag-to-flag coverage of each stage, and nightly highlights show.
