Two Oldham men have been sentenced after a dog walker was killed in a hit and run.

Shortly after 9.10pm on October 31, 2021, Marius Tartar was struck by a BMW while walking his dog on Hollin Lane in Middleton.

The 35-year-old was taken to hospital but died from his injuries on November 13.

Dylan Loasby, of Dunwood Park Courts in Shaw, who was driving the car, fled the scene and did not attend a police station until November 2 when he was arrested.

The 20-year-old did not have a driving licence and was not insured.

Karl Jones, of Birch Hall Close in Oldham, the registered keeper of the car, allowed Loasby to use the car knowing he had no insurance, no licence, and was driving it on false number plates.

After the crash, the 40-year-old told Loasby to dispose of the false plates so investigating officers would not link him to the car.

At Minshull Street Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday) Loasby was jailed for two years and three months after being found guilty of causing death by careless driving and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Jones was found guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and sentenced to 10 months imprisonment.

Detective Constable Jack Gregory, from Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Loasby should not have been behind the wheel of that car, and his decisions that night resulted in the death of a man who was simply out to walk his dog.

“This was entirely avoidable, and I hope that Loasby takes his time behind bars to think about his actions. Likewise, Jones, who tried to frustrate this investigation, is now rightly too behind bars. I hope today’s sentencing sends a strong message to other drivers.

“Our thoughts remain with Marius' family today, and we hope that they continue to heal and find comfort.”
