Four Oldham gyms are set to be transformed this Autumn with £750,000 refurbishments that include a new sauna and cycle zone.

The gyms at Chadderton Wellbeing Centre, Failsworth Sports Centre, Oldham Leisure Centre and Royton Leisure Centre are all due to be upgraded as part of the works funded by Oldham Active, the charitable trust that operates leisure facilities in the borough.

As part of the refurbishments there will be a total replacement of the cardiovascular equipment and each of the indoor cycling studios will benefit from either new or upgraded bikes.

At Oldham Leisure Centre there will be a new interactive gym floor cycle zone with interactive bikes that offer users an immersive cycling experience including training apps, on-demand coaches, and a variety of outdoor routes.

Over at Royton Leisure Centre a sauna is being installed as part of the works following requests from customers.

Upgrades across all the sites include new lighting, décor, and flooring. All the leisure centre opening times are being extended for gym and pool users and public Wi-Fi is being introduced. Oldham Active is also introducing ‘BLAST’ classes using equipment including specialist curved treadmills by TechnoGym and SKI ergs which replicate Nordic ski function movements.

Stuart Lockwood, Oldham Active chief executive, said: “This substantial investment demonstrates our commitment to continuous improvement.

“This isn’t just a lick of paint; the plans are extensive and will ensure our spaces are safe, welcoming and inclusive to all. The range of the new equipment, plus our existing classes and sports and aquatic activities demonstrate there is really something for everyone.”

The works have been scheduled to minimise disruption and Oldham Active has said it does not envisage having to close the centres whilst works are carried out.
