The works of artists from Oldham are being celebrated at a new art exhibition coming to the borough this month.

Gallery Oldham is hosting the Points of View exhibit by the Saddleworth Group of Artists, with artwork from 40 members of the group set to be on display.

The art will showcase a range of styles and subjects and will include works that may be familiar to Oldhamers.

Paintings such as Annie Kenney by David Ralston and The Demolition of Orb Mill, Waterhead by Philip Hughes take inspiration from sites in the borough.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to take some of the works home, with some of the paintings up for sale.

Cllr Peter Dean, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said: “We are really pleased to welcome the Saddleworth Group of Artists to Gallery Oldham.

“It’s good to see local talent being given an opportunity to show off their works to a wider audience.

“I’d urge people to go along and see the show – and you never know you might just see something that you want to hang on your living room wall at home.”

The Saddleworth Group of Artists was formed in 1950 by Ellis Shaw, along with other artists who had studied in evening classes at Oldham Art School.

Exhibitions were held in an old weaving loft in Uppermill where famous Manchester artist L.S. Lowry was a frequent visitor.

In 1979, the artists were invited to showcase their works in the new gallery extension at Saddleworth Museum.

The group's exhibitions and meetings continue to be held there twice a year, as well as at other galleries in the area.

Points of View opens at Gallery Oldham on Saturday, September 16 and will run until Saturday, December 2.
