Witnesses said there were also a number of armed officers in the alley around the back of Featherstall Road.
Others also saw armed police officers patrolling the road for some time.
In a statement to The Oldham Times, GMP said it was later established that there was no gun as first reported.
However, a man in his 30s was arrested in the area for an unrelated incident.
