Parts of Oldham have been put under a rain weather warning later this week as Storm Babet is set to bring heavy rain.

According to the Met Office, Uppermill and surrounding areas in Saddleworth are included in the yellow warning area – though other parts of the borough to the west are not.

The warning spans from 9pm on Wednesday to 6am on Saturday. Wind gusts of up to 40mph have been forecast during the warning period.

The Met Office warns that the storm will bring a period of ‘very wet weather’, with a ‘small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings’.

The weather agency has also warned of a chance of road closures, public transport cancellations, and power cuts – though says the risk is small.

The Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, Steven Keates, said: “Storm Babet will bring impactful rain to many parts of the UK, but especially parts of eastern Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England later this week.

“Heavy and persistent rain will fall onto already saturated ground bringing a risk of flooding. It is important to stay up to date with warnings from your local flood warning agency as well as the local authorities.

“As well as heavy rain, Storm Babet will bring some very strong winds and large waves near some eastern coasts too. Gusts in excess of 60mph are possible in eastern and northern Scotland from Thursday. It is likely Met Office warnings will be updated through the week.”
