A man has been taken to hospital after a crash took place on a major road in Oldham.

At approximately 11.30am yesterday, (Saturday, October 21), emergency services were called to Manchester Road to reports of a "serious collision" involving a car and a pedestrian. 

A man believed  in his 20s has been taken to hospital where he remains with "serious injuries".

Residents in the area said the road was cordoned off around the Shell petrol station for most of Saturday and this morning as emergency services remain on the scene.

Photographs show the cordon stretches from around the garage and towards Old Mother Hubbard's fish and chips shop. 

Ambulances, an air ambulance and police cars were all seen in the area.

Greater Manchester Police are now appealing to the public for witnesses and information about the crash.

A spokesman said: "At around 11:30am on Saturday 21 October, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were called to reports of a road traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian on Manchester Street, Oldham.

"Emergency services attended and a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving. He has since been bailed.

""GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

They are keen to speak to anyone who may have any footage, including dashcam, mobile phone footage, or CCTV from the area in the moments leading up to the collision.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 4741 quoting log 1401 of 21/10/2023."

The North West Ambulance Service and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue have also been approached for comment.
