German Christmas markets with a brass band, choir, Santa's grotto, ice rink and more will be coming to Shaw and Crompton for the first time this festive season.

On Sunday, November 26, Kershaw Street East car park will transform into a winter wonderland with several attractions for all the family to get involved in.

The main attraction will be a synthetic ice rink, believed to be the first to come to the parish in its history, as well as a Santa's grotto with Santa Claus and Mrs Claus housed inside and a paint ball firing range.

A marquee will also be erected throughout the day, from 10am until 7pm, with an estimated 40 to 50 stalls, including an airstream bar.

Traditional Christmas market food and drinks will be served, including mulled wine and Bratwurst sausages, as well as stone-based pizzas from Country Pizza, cakes and pastries, cheese, and other items from the Lancashire Wellness Kitchen.

Shaw and Crompton Parish Council said there will also be a "fabulous selection" of stalls selling wooden items, jewellery and various gifts, as well as pet items from Paws for Treats.

Meanwhile, a choir of local school children, a brass band and a DJ will bring the entertainment.

Councillor Lisa Navesey, who helped bring the market idea to life, said: "So many people we have talked to have expressed dismay at Shaw's lack of a vibrant market.

"We decided bringing back a market would be a key priority for us.

"Our German Christmas market will be the prelude to a regular community market, which we believe will act as a focus of residents and a much-needed shot in the arm for our town's economy."

Ms Navesey said it has taken "a lot of effort" from the parish council behind the scenes, including sourcing the ice rink and other attractions.

She added: "We really are excited and are looking forward to bringing this event to Shaw and Crompton."

The markets follow the day after Shaw and Crompton host its Christmas lights switch on.

The Saturday event, from 2pm until 6pm on Market Street, will see live music and other entertainment staged all day, including street entertainment and a pipe band, as well as Santa on his sleigh.
