A luxurious 'cat hotel' has officially opened its doors to feline guests looking for a cosy getaway.

Pet Au Purrs Pet Hotel on High Street in Lees has been renovated as a new businesswoman has taken the reigns.

Diane Grogan said she decided to open the unique business after managing the former cattery, then known as Tanglewood, several years ago and "loved it".

Ms Grogan said she worked for Mr and Mrs Thomas at the veterinary clinic next door, called Countys End Veterinary Hospital, and moved to manage their cattery for a while.

Then in 2004, she opened her first business - a pet-sitting service - called Pet Au Purrs which she said became "very popular" as she offered visits to the home to care for pets while their owners were away.

Ms Grogan said: "I also have had a grooming shop and a commercial doggy daycare centre, but with age creeping up and wanting to slow down the pace, I have more recently been offering a dog home boarding service from my home.

"When I heard that the recent owners of Tanglewood - Medivet - were planning to close, I decided to take over and rebrand."

The animal lover said her family even put their house up for sale to move into the accommodation to be "available for the cats" and said the new premises are "more secure".

As for the vacationing cats, they each have their own room with a sleeping area, "somewhere to hide" if they want to, a TV, where the hotel plays DVDs during the day, and soft lighting.

Each room is indoor and individually heated with temperature control and the cats are fed to the owner's specifications, as many times as needed.

The cats are also groomed when needed and have plenty of interaction time with the staff so that they have "company and companionship daily".

Price-wise, owners will pay £14.85 for one cat to stay in an apartment, £20 for two cats sharing a room and £27 for three.

Ms Grogan said the team are qualified to medicate pets with veterinary-prescribed medication, including insulin injections, and all staff and volunteers take part in pet first aid courses and other training.

Pet Au Purrs Pet Hotel officially opened its doors on September 19 this year, however, only five of the 18 rooms for the cats were approved by the council.

Ms Grogan then completed some minor repairs on the other rooms and, as of November 1, the rest of the rooms were approved and she was issued a full licence.

By next year, it is hoped the hotel will have even more rooms which are larger in size to cater for families of cats.

The cattery is open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 12pm and 4pm until 6pm while weekends and bank holidays are only open in the morning slot (9-12pm).
