Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Debbie Abrahams has written to the Prime Minister, questioning the appointment of former PM David Cameron as Foreign Secretary.

The Labour MP shared on her social media pages on Monday (November 13) evening that she had written to Rishi Sunak about her concerns over Lord Cameron's appointment due to his involvement in the Greensill controversy.

In 2021, reports emerged that the previous year, Lord Cameron, who was serving as an adviser to Lex Greensill of Greensill Capital, had privately lobbied then-Chancellor Mr Sunak in an attempt to win Greensill Capital access to an emergency Covid loan scheme.

Lord Cameron was said to have sent multiple texts to Mr Sunak at the time and a phone call was said to have taken place, however his requests were declined by the government.

Now, Ms Abrahams has said Lord Cameron's hire is "deeply concerning" as there is a history of him trying to use his personal relationship with Mr Sunak and other government officials to support the financial interests of his employer.

The MP has asked that the PM release all treasury documents relating to the Greensill scandal to the House of Lords Appointments Commission and has requested that Mr Sunak's adviser on Ministerial Standards investigates the implications of Lord Cameron's hire.

The Commons Treasury Committee said the former PM had displayed a “significant lack of judgment” but cleared him of breaching lobbying rules.

Speaking following his shock appointment, Lord Cameron said: “All those things were dealt with by the Treasury Select Committee, and other inquiries at the time.

“As far as I am concerned, that is all dealt with and in the past. I now have one job, as Britain’s Foreign Secretary.”

Lord Cameron said he has stepped away from all of this other roles, including president of Alzheimer’s Research UK and his role as a professor at New York University.
