An Oldham woman has been ordered to pay more than £1,400 for fly-tipping just over 100 yards from her home.

Aneela Hanif, of Belgrave Road in Glodwick, was charged with fly-tipping at Stockport Magistrates’ Court last Monday, for dumping household waste at the side of a property on Thatcher Street, “on or before” November 23 2021.

Lib Dem Cllr Howard Sykes has slammed the 31-year-old, who originally pleaded not guilty in November last year, for dumping 14 bags of waste in an alleyway beside the property on Thatcher Street – which is less than 20 doors away from her residence.

“Everyone else pays for it when someone dumps their rubbish on the side of the road,” he said.

“I’m not sure of the exact figure but the council pays around £4m a year to pick other people’s rubbish up - if people don’t dispose of their rubbish in the correct manner, then they deserve to get punished.

“If you put bins and fly-tipping together that’s a lot of money we could spend elsewhere, because it costs a small fortune to remove fly-tips.”

Hanif was handed a £500 fine for illegally dumping her household waste, ordered to pay a £50 victim surcharge and pay court costs to the tune of £862.

A spokesperson for Oldham Council added: “We received a complaint in November 2021 about waste dumped at the side of a property on Thatcher Street.

“We visited and found 14 bags of waste with evidence in some bags relating to Belgrave Road. Aneela Hanif claimed the waste must have been taken from her rear yard and dumped so she was issued with a fixed penalty notice for a duty of care offence which she failed to pay.

“She also didn’t attend court and was found guilty in her absence.”
