A man is in a critical condition after a police car collided with a pedestrian in the early hours of Sunday morning.
At around 3.25am yesterday, officers requested a vehicle to stop in Rochdale but the driver failed to and a short police pursuit commenced on Milnrow Road.
The chase continued onto Rochdale Road where the collision between the police vehicle and the pedestrian occurred.
Officers provided medical assistance to the injured man, who was taken to Salford Royal Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
The male driver of the vehicle failed to stop at the scene of the collision, and enquiries are now underway to locate him.
A spokesperson for the Independent Office for Police Conduct, the police watchdog, added: "Following a referral from Greater Manchester Police we have started an independent investigation into the circumstances of a road traffic collision involving a police vehicle and a pedestrian.
“We were notified by the force that the collision occurred on Milnrow Road, Rochdale, at approximately 3.30am on Sunday. Officers provided medical assistance to the man who was taken to hospital for the injuries he sustained.
“Our investigation is in the very early stages.”
