An Oldham model has thanked Chanel for giving her a "career highlight".

Karen Elson walked the runway on Thomas Street, located in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, at the fashion house’s Métiers d’Art event on Thursday, December 7.

The event saw the street closed off for an invite-only fashion show, with a transparent roof protecting the street from the pouring rain.

In a post on Instagram, the model from Oldham said: “By Eck! Manchester you made me proud.

“Thank you @chanelofficial @virginieviard for investing in Manchester and highlighting how culturally significant it is.

“There is a saying that it’s grim up north which doesn’t do Manchester justice since it is responsible for raising some of Great Britain’s finest. It was a profound joy to come back home.”

In a second post, she added: “Tonight was a pinch me moment. To close the Chanel Metiers D’Art show in my home town of Manchester was an emotional career highlight. Talk about coming full circle.

“Profound thanks to @chanelofficial @virginieviard the entire Chanel team and @michelgaubert.

“My first fashion show was Chanel with Karl Lagerfeld and it’s incredible decades later to walk for Chanel again this time in my birthplace. “

North Chadderton School’s official account on X (formerly Twitter) congratulated its former student.

The account posted: “So proud to watch one of our ex-students closing the Chanel Manchester Fashion Show yesterday! @KarenElson_ amazing!”

Karen was not the only Oldham model to walk the runway – Libby Bennett, an 18-year-old from Grasscroft, was also one of the stars strutting at the exclusive event.

Earlier this year, Oldhamer Karen lamented the then-impending closure of Oldham Coliseum.

In a now-deleted post on Twitter (now X), she posted: “A theatre that was very close to my heart when I was young and was also a big part of many northerners lives.

“It’s sad that the funding has been taken away.”
