The performances of Oldham primary schools based on Key Stage 2 exams have been revealed through new government figures.

On Thursday (December 14), the government released the performance data of primary school around the country, which show how primary schools in the borough ranked.

The figures show how well schools perform in the SATs exams and also reflect progress made while children are at primary school.

The top performing primary school in the borough was Diggle School, based on Sam Road in the Saddleworth village, where 88 per cent of students met the expected standard.

Students perform at the expected standard when they obtain a score of 100 or more in their reading and maths tests and their teacher assesses them as working at their expected standard or better in writing.

Sarah Newton, headteacher of Diggle School, said: "Our village school provides a nurturing community in which our children can grow and thrive in all areas.

"We are so proud of all our pupils and these results coming on the back of a good Ofsted inspection are the icing on the cake."

Diggle School received a Good rating from Ofsted back in June this year.

Cllr Mohon Ali, Cabinet member for Education and Skills, said: “The primary school performance data for the 2022/23 academic year shows that 55% of Oldham pupils achieved the expected standard at end of Key Stage 2. In reading and maths pupils made better progress than their peers across England, but there is more work to be done in writing.

"We’re proud of the progress made by Oldham children since their education was affected by the impact of multiple school closures during the COVID 19 pandemic. School staff and parents have supported the recovery of their learning since then, and these outcomes show that most pupils are on track to engage fully in their secondary schools.”

Department for Education chiefs warned that school performance data for the 2022/23 academic year should be used with caution given the ongoing impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, which affected individual schools and pupils differently.

School performance data should be considered alongside a range of other information about the school, which could include looking at school websites, reading Ofsted reports, and speaking to the school directly. Conclusions should not be drawn on a single piece of data alone.

St Mary's RC Primary School and St Mary's Church of England Primary School High Crompton were all approached for a comment.
