Strong winds that will bring "danger to life" are set to hit Oldham.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning taking place on Thursday, with gales reaching speeds of up to 60mph expected to sweep across the borough.

It said: "Overnight Wednesday into Thursday, strong west to north westerly winds are likely to develop across a large swathe of the country.

"Quite widely winds are expected to peak with gusts reaching 50 - 60 mph, however in some locations, such as exposed coastlines, plus over and to the east of high ground there is a chance that gusts of 70 - 80 mph may be seen in some populated places.

"The exact areas and timing of the peak wind gusts speeds are yet to be fully determined, with a chance that this event could continue into Friday for some areas too."

The warning is in place for the entirety of Thursday and brings a "small chance" of longer journey times, or cancellations, as roads and bridge closures may be put in place.

The blustering gales may cause some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, as the Met Office warned that there may be injuries and danger to life from flying debris.

This means that people should secure any loose items outside of their homes like bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences.

While mobile phone coverage could also be affected as power cuts may occur.

In Oldham, people can expect a cloudy day today before the more dramatic conditions arrive later in the week.

While tomorrow, residents should expect a cloudy and drizzly day.
